Agate borrows its name from the Achates river in Sicily where it was discovered to be in abundance around 300 BC. As a result, it was often used by the Greeks to adorn jewelry and as seals for warriors. Romans themselves found large deposits along the Nahe river and set up several gem cutting facilities on the banks to fashion this gem. The Byzantines as well used Agate to make bowls and utensils. Agate probably reached its peak in the middle-ages in Europe where jewelry made from it was highly prized especially in the court of Queen Victoria.Properties
